Changes in Jupiter’s magnetic field have been detected making it the first planet to share this feature with earth.

The discovery was made by the Juno Spacecraft and this will help scientists understand how a planet’s magnetic field can change. Recent data was compared to results taken from earlier missions of Pioneer 10 and Voyager 1 in the 1970s. It is no big secret that storms rage across the planet and researchers believe that these storms are to blame. The origin of Jupiter’s magnetic field is very different to that of Earth’s but the discovery might help scientists understand the changes in our own magnetic field.

Earth’s GPS systems need to be updated frequently and this is a result of our magnetic north pole shifting by a least 30 meters a year! A failure in our magnetic field could have disastrous consequences for life on our planet….including mass extinction!
